New Jersey’s Online Business Formation Alternate Filing

Welcome to New Jersey’s online Business Formation Alternate Filing Service. This service is an update to the Fax Filing process which is now called the Alternate Filing process. You may use this service to file certificates of formation and authorization of business entities. This service allows submission of Business Formation applications for businesses that file Formations on behalf of clients, or for businesses that need to file for a Reserved Business Name or other situation that does not meet the standard Business Formation requirements and would normally require the paper/fax form.

When you complete your application, it will be submitted to the Division of Revenue for manual review. Once approved, your formation will be processed and you will receive your Formation documents.

If your business meets the standard Business Formation requirements and you want your documents immediately after filing, please use the regular online Business Formation service.

When should I use this application?

  • When your Business Name was previously reserved, has less than 4 characters, contains restricted words, or requires manual review.
  • When you need to include/append documentation that cannot be attached during the regular online Business Formation service Business Formation.

You should use the Online Registration form instead if:

  • You have already formed/authorized your business in NJ and need to register for tax purposes
  • You are looking to start a Sole Proprietorship or Partnership

  • Registered Agent information (including Email Address to receive Registered Agent notifications)
  • Good Standing Certificate from your home state (only for foreign entities)

Business Accounts

If your business frequently uses the Business Formation online service or Business Formation Alternate Filing, or needs to provide staff access to use a shared payment account to submit filings, you may want to consider creating an account for the Business Formation service. In order to create an account you will need to create a new My New Jersey account or link an existing My New Jersey account. Accounts can be used for both regular Business Formation filings and Business Formation Alternate Filings.

Note: If your business has already created an account, you will need your administrator to send you an invitation to create your account and link it to the Business Account.
